AVIF converter

Convert your AVIF files to any format.

What is a AVIF file?

AVIF is the newest mainstream image format — outstanding compression, but support outside browsers is still patchy.

First released in 2019 by Alliance for Open Media, it uses lossy compression, transparency support and animation, which makes it best suited to next-generation web images with maximum compression.

Drop a AVIF file below and we'll show you every conversion available, each one processed locally on your device — nothing is uploaded to a server, so converting is instant and completely private.

Advantages of the AVIF format

  • Leading compression

Achieves even smaller files than WebP and JPG while keeping excellent quality — ideal for highly optimized websites.

  • Advanced color and HDR

Supports high dynamic range (HDR) and a wide color gamut, showing richer, more lifelike tones than classic formats.

  • Transparency and animation

Like WebP, it supports transparency and animated sequences within one modern format.

AVIF: frequently asked questions

Is AVIF better than WebP?

In compression, usually yes: at the same quality an AVIF tends to be smaller. In return, its support outside the browser is still more limited.

What programs open AVIF files?

Modern browsers display it fine, but many desktop editors don't yet. Converting to JPG or PNG ensures the image opens anywhere.

Why do AVIF files take longer to create?

Its compression is more sophisticated and demands more computation, so encoding an AVIF takes a little longer than a JPG — even though the resulting file is lighter.

Does AVIF support transparency?

Yes — like PNG and WebP it preserves transparent backgrounds, and it also supports animation.
