What is a RTF file?

RTF is the cross-platform text format — plain-text markup for bold, fonts and layout that virtually every word processor since the 1980s can read.

First released in 1987 by Microsoft, it uses lossless compression and no transparency, which makes it best suited to formatted text that needs to open in almost any word processor, regardless of vendor.

Advantages of the RTF format

  • Near-universal compatibility

RTF is readable by virtually every word processor ever made — Word, WordPad, LibreOffice, Pages and more — making it a safe bet for cross-platform sharing.

  • Keeps basic formatting

Unlike plain text, RTF preserves bold, italic, fonts, colors and simple layout, while still being a much simpler format than DOCX.

  • Human-readable markup

It's plain text under the hood, so it can be generated or parsed by simple scripts without a full document-processing library.

RTF: frequently asked questions

Is RTF the same as plain text?

No — RTF adds formatting markup (bold, fonts, colors, alignment) on top of plain text, while TXT has none. RTF sits between TXT and DOCX in complexity.

Why would I use RTF instead of DOCX?

When you need guaranteed compatibility with very old or unusual word processors. Almost anything that opens documents can read RTF, whereas DOCX support can vary.

Does RTF support images and tables?

Yes, though support varies more between applications than with DOCX. For complex layouts, DOCX or PDF are more reliable.

Is the conversion private?
