What is a PNG file?

PNG is the lossless workhorse — pixel-perfect quality and full transparency support, accepted everywhere.

First released in 1996 by PNG Development Group (W3C standard), it uses lossless compression and transparency support, which makes it best suited to screenshots, logos, graphics with sharp edges or transparency.

Drop a PNG file below and we'll show you every conversion available, each one processed locally on your device — nothing is uploaded to a server, so converting is instant and completely private.

Advantages of the PNG format

  • Lossless quality

Keeps every pixel exactly as the original, no matter how many times you edit and save. Ideal whenever fidelity matters.

  • True transparency

Supports transparent backgrounds and alpha channels — perfect for logos, icons and graphics layered over other designs.

  • Sharp edges and text

Reproduces lines, text and crisp edges without the blurry artifacts JPG tends to introduce.

PNG: frequently asked questions

Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?

PNG stores every pixel losslessly, while JPG discards detail to compress. For photos a PNG can be 3–10× larger, which is exactly why PNG suits graphics and JPG suits photographs.

Is PNG better than JPG?

It depends on the use. PNG wins for logos, screenshots, text and transparency. JPG wins for photographs, where it achieves much smaller files at near-identical quality.

Does PNG support transparency?

Yes — it's one of its biggest strengths. It can store fully and partially transparent areas through an alpha channel.

Does converting to PNG improve image quality?

It can't recover detail that's already gone, but from the conversion onward no further quality is lost, no matter how much you edit and re-save.

Does PNG support animation?

Standard PNG doesn't. Animations use the APNG variant or, better still, formats like WebP or GIF.
