What is a JPG file?

JPG is the universal photo format — opens in every app, device and website made since the early 90s.

First released in 1992 by Joint Photographic Experts Group, it uses lossy compression and no transparency, which makes it best suited to photos and realistic images.

Drop a JPG file below and we'll show you every conversion available, each one processed locally on your device — nothing is uploaded to a server, so converting is instant and completely private.

Advantages of the JPG format

  • Universal compatibility

Opens on any device, browser, photo editor or online service with nothing to install. It's the most widely accepted image format in the world.

  • Small file sizes

Its compression shrinks photos dramatically, making them easy to email, upload to websites or store by the thousand without filling up your drive.

  • Built for photographs

It handles millions of colors and smooth gradients, reproducing real-world photos and scenes with great fidelity.

JPG: frequently asked questions

What's the difference between JPG and JPEG?

None — they're the same format. 'JPG' is just the three-letter extension inherited from old Windows systems that couldn't handle four. .jpg and .jpeg files are identical inside.

Why does my JPG lose quality every time I save it?

JPG uses lossy compression, so each edit-and-save discards a little more detail. If you'll be editing an image a lot, convert it to PNG to avoid that cumulative degradation.

Can a JPG have a transparent background?

No. JPG doesn't support transparency — transparent areas are filled with white. If you need transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.

When should I use JPG instead of PNG?

Use JPG for photographs and realistic images, where it produces far smaller files. Use PNG for logos, screenshots, text or graphics with sharp edges and transparency.

How do I make a JPG file smaller?

Convert it to a more modern format like WebP or AVIF, which deliver the same visual quality at noticeably smaller sizes.
