What is a JFIF file?

JFIF is a regular JPEG wearing a .jfif extension — same image data, but many apps and forms reject the name.

First released in 1992 by Eric Hamilton / C-Cube Microsystems, it uses lossy compression and no transparency, which makes it best suited to JPEG images saved with an unusual extension.

Drop a JFIF file below and we'll show you every conversion available, each one processed locally on your device — nothing is uploaded to a server, so converting is instant and completely private.

Advantages of the JFIF format

  • It's a standard JPEG

Inside, a .jfif is exactly a JPEG: same image quality and same compression. Only the file extension is different.

  • Easy to fix

Converting it to .jpg instantly makes it compatible with websites, forms and programs that reject the .jfif extension.

  • Lightweight photos

It inherits JPEG's efficient compression, so photos stay small and quick to share.

JFIF: frequently asked questions

What is a JFIF file and why do I have one?

JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is an ordinary JPEG saved with a .jfif extension. It often appears when you download images from certain browsers or email apps that rename JPEGs.

Are JFIF and JPG the same thing?

The image data is identical. The only practical difference is the extension: many programs and sites don't recognize .jfif but do accept .jpg, which is why converting helps.

Will I lose quality converting JFIF to JPG?

No. Since it's already a JPEG, changing the extension to .jpg doesn't recompress or alter the image — you get the same file with a name everyone accepts.

Why do some websites reject .jfif files?

Because they only expect familiar extensions like .jpg or .png. Converting to JPG fixes the problem without changing the image at all.
