What is a GIF file?

GIF is the 1987 classic — limited to 256 colors, kept alive almost entirely by its looping animations.

First released in 1987 by CompuServe, it uses lossless compression, transparency support and animation, which makes it best suited to simple animations and legacy web graphics.

Drop a GIF file below and we'll show you every conversion available, each one processed locally on your device — nothing is uploaded to a server, so converting is instant and completely private.

Advantages of the GIF format

  • Looping animations

It's the most recognized format for short animations that play automatically and loop everywhere, with no player required.

  • Total compatibility

It has worked in absolutely every browser, messaging app and social network for decades.

  • Lossless with transparency

Preserves exact colors (up to 256) and supports transparent areas, ideal for simple graphics and icons.

GIF: frequently asked questions

Why does my GIF look like it has few colors?

GIF is limited to a 256-color palette. For photographs with many tones, PNG or WebP preserve detail far better.

Can I convert an animated GIF to another format?

Yes, although converting to JPG or PNG keeps only the first frame. To keep the animation, WebP is the best option.

GIF or WebP for animations?

WebP produces much higher-quality animations at a smaller size. GIF is only worth it when you need compatibility with very old systems.

Does GIF lose quality?

The compression itself is lossless, but the 256-color limit forces it to drop tones in color-rich images like photos.
