What is a DOCX file?

DOCX is the standard editable document format — rich text, images and tables in a file every version of Word and most office suites can open and edit.

First released in 2007 by Microsoft, it uses lossless compression and no transparency, which makes it best suited to editable documents, reports and letters compatible with Microsoft Word.

Drop a DOCX file below to see every available conversion. Files are processed server-side using LibreOffice and deleted immediately after — never stored.

Advantages of the DOCX format

  • Fully editable

Unlike PDF, DOCX preserves the full document structure — text, headings, tables and images remain independently editable in any word processor.

  • Universal office compatibility

DOCX is the default format for Microsoft Word and is supported by Google Docs, LibreOffice, Apple Pages and virtually every other office suite.

  • Rich formatting support

Supports styles, fonts, tables, lists, images, headers, footers and tracked changes — everything needed for professional documents.

DOCX: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between DOCX and PDF?

DOCX is editable — you can change text, formatting and structure in any word processor. PDF is fixed — it looks identical everywhere but you can't freely edit it. Convert to DOCX when you need to make changes; convert to PDF when you need to share or print.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to DOCX?

Scanned PDFs are images of text, not selectable text, so conversion to DOCX requires OCR (optical character recognition). Our converter works best with digitally created PDFs.

Is the conversion private?

Document conversion (PDF ↔ DOCX) is processed on our servers using LibreOffice — your file is deleted immediately after conversion and never stored.
