What is a AMR file?

AMR is the codec built for phone calls — optimized for speech at very low bit rates, but rarely playable outside dedicated voicemail or call-recording apps.

First released in 1999 by 3GPP / Ericsson, it uses lossy compression and no transparency, which makes it best suited to old voicemails and voice recordings from feature phones and early smartphones.

Advantages of the AMR format

  • Extremely small for speech

AMR was designed to carry phone calls over cellular networks, so voice recordings are tiny compared to music codecs.

AMR: frequently asked questions

Why won't my AMR voicemail play in my music app?
